Equipment

Owing to the manifold research interests, a wide spectrum of analytical equipment is at hand in our group.

In detail, the following analytical equipment is presently available in our group:

NMR spectroscopy

  • 400 MHz Multinuclear NMR with autosampler, ATM head and variable temperature device (Bruker Avance II+, acquired 2007).
  • 200 MHz NMR with QNP probe head (1H, 19F, 13C, 31P) and low temp unit. Console upgraded 2001 (DPX); Software: Topspin 1.3.
  • 300 MHz NMR with autosampler, ATM head and variable temperature device (Bruker Avance III, acquired 2014).

Vibrational spectroscopy

  • Nicolet Magna IR spectrometer for FIR (250-600cm-1) and MIR (400-4000 cm-1) measurements.
  • Bruker Vertex 70 Raman spectrometer
  • Bruker Alpha-P IR spectrometer equipped with a Platinum-ATR with a diamond crystal.

Quantum-chemical calculations

  • Computer cluster with 124 nodes, including six performance nodes each equipped with 12 CPUs, 128 GB RAM and 800 GB hard drive space designated for delicate correlated ab initio calculations. Site licenses to Gaussian 09, Turbomole 6.4, CFOUR and COSMO-RS. Additionally installed programs include ORCA, GAMESS and others.

X-ray diffraction

  • Bruker Smart APEXII QUAZAR single-crystal diffractometer with Oxford Cryosystems 800 crystal cooling device.
  • Rigaku R-AXIS Spyder-S single-crystal diffractometer with Bruker Kryoflex II crystal cooling device.
  • Software projects: DSR / FragmentDB

Catalysis

  • Single line Catalysis testing equipment for the synthesis of methanol from CO2 and H2 (Miniplant) incl. quantitative GC
  • Quadruple line Catalysis testing equipment for the synthesis of methanol from CO/CO2 and H2 (RuboKat)

Electrochemical measurements

  • BioLogic SP-300 potentiostat capable of all common electro-chemical characterization techniques.
  • Princeton Applied Research PAR263 A potentiostat.
  • Metrohm 712 conductometer.
  • Mettler Toledo Seven Easy conductometer.
  • Equipment of the BASF Battery Materials Laboratory

Mass spectrometry

  • Advion expression L electron spray ionization mass spectrometer (ESI-MS)

 Direct Fluorination with gaseous F2

  • Fume hood completely lined with V4A steel, equipped with a Monel vacuum line and a secured F2 bottle.
  • High pressure and low pressure flow controllers for N2 and F2.
  • Suitable reaction vesssels such as Monel and PFA flasks.

Other equipment 

  • Brookfield RVDV-III UCP rheometer
  • Setaram differential scanning calorimeter (DSC).
  • Four Gloveboxes; in one it is possible to run temperature dependent conductivity measurements (Metrohm 712) using a 24 sample block heater
  • Karl-Fischer titrator (Schott Instruments KF trace) for the measurement  of water contents down to 1 ppm.
  • Hettich EBA 21 centrifuge.
